Bhagat Singh Koshyari likely to be next Uttarakhand BJP chief

DEHRADUN: BJP national vice-president Bhagat Singh Koshyari is all set to be unanimously nominated as the next BJP chief in Uttarakhand with Tirath Singh Rawat and Trivendra Singh Rawat, two of the top contenders, withdrawing their nomination papers on Monday.

Both the Rawats withdrew their nomination papers a day after they filed it for the poll for the post of state BJP chief.

A source in BJP said as there will be no elections now and Koshyari may be nominated as chief on Tuesday.

Tirath is a BJP legislator from Chobbathakhal in Uttarakhand's Pauri district and Trivendra was a minister in previous BJP government. Tirath was backed by former CMs B C Khanduri and Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank while Trivendra was Koshyari's candidate.

BJP state Spokesperson Satish Lakhera said that Rawats withdrew their nomination papers after an order from BJP's central leadership saying that in view of the upcoming Lok Sabha polls in 2014, only a leader with mass support will be nominated as next state chief.

While former BJP state chief B S Chufal's term in the second week of December, he has been officiating as the acting state chief.

Lakhera said Koshyari is most likely to be nominated as next BJP state chief. He served as the Uttarakhand CM from 2001 to 2002. Koshyari is widely known as a leader of masses inside the Uttarakhand BJP.
